✦ Synopsis
The first high-resolution (\left(0.002 \mathrm{~cm}^{-1}\right.) ) infrared spectrum of the transient molecule formyl chloride, (\mathrm{HCOCl}), is reported. The (\nu_{3}) type (A / B) hybrid band between 1220 and (1390 \mathrm{~cm}^{-1}) has been analyzed in detail, providing assignments for the (A) - and (B)-type lines of both (\mathrm{HCO}^{35} \mathrm{Cl}) and (\mathrm{HCO}^{37} \mathrm{Cl}). The ground state rotational constants have been refined by a simultaneous fitting of previously reported microwave data and combination differences from the (\nu_{3}) and (\nu_{6}) bands of (\mathrm{HCOCl}). The excited state constants of both isotopomers have been obtained from fitting assignments over a wide range of (J) and (K_{a}) values. By comparing relative intensities, we estimate the ratio of the (B)-type to (A)-type transition moments to be (0.25 \pm 0.1). The (\nu_{3}) band shows only minor perturbations. c 1993 Academic Press.
