A modified fuzzy c-varieties (FCV) algorithm is proposed which is capable of seeking out a mixture of clusters of possibly different shapes. The algorithm adapts to the structure encountered during the computation and should thereby be more likely to successfully detect the actual structure in the data and less likely to impose it,
