Reduction of I~-phthalimido-et-keto phosphonates, obtained through an Arbuzov reaction between the appropriate acid chloride and triethyl phosphite, with boranes and oxazaborolidine as catalyst, afforded I~-phthalimido-0t-hydroxy phosphonates in good yields and high diastereoselectivity. ## An efficient preparation of ␣-amino phosphonates by the one-pot condensation of aldehydes, amines, and dialkyl phosphites using catalytic amounts of lanthanide chloride under mild conditions is successfully developed. Moreover, the catalyst is water-tolerant and could be recovered and reused.
