The sequence of a protein is, under normal circumstances, determined uniquely by the sequence of its mRNA. In the following Communication, Kumar, Tirrell, and their co-workers show that this need not be true: 4,4,4-trifluorovaline can be assigned either to valine codons or to isoleucine codons, depending on the levels of activity of the respective aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases in the expression host.
