✦ Synopsis

AFRICAN DRYING OILS. IV. COMPONENT SUNFLOWER SEED OIL. ACIDS OF SOME LINOLEIC-RICH OILS. Ug C. BAHKEH, A. CROSSLEY. 1 ' . 1' . HlLDlTCCI The fatty oils from ten specimens of African sunflower sccd from widcly different areas, and an Argcntine sunflowcr seed oil have been studicd. The iodine values of the oils nnged from 113-136, their linoleic acid contcnts from to 72U,h, and their oleic ncid contents from 43',';, to 14:~. SunRowcr seed oils in which linoleic acid forms about 70% or more of the total fatty acids are exccllent non-ycllowing drying oils. Although the results rcponcd in this paper are insufficient to define whcther the widc variations in the proportions of linoleic and olcic acids arc due to cnvironmental or varietal (XIUSCIS, there is reason to consider that the environmcnt of the sunflower plant exerts a much greater influence on the composition of the oil than differenccs in the variety of seed grown.
