Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectra were obtained from single biological aerosol particles using an aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ATOFMS). The inlet to the ATOFMS was coupled with an evaporation/condensation flow cell that allowed the aerosol to be coated wit

✦ Synopsis
The effects of methanol, ethanol, propan-2-01 and acetonitrile on the aerosol matrix-assisted laser desorptionlionization (MALDI) ion signal of hradykinin, bovine insulin and myoglobin were examined. The effect of these solvents mixed with water was also studied. The aerosol MALDI ion signal for each analyte depends on the solvent, but the solvent dependence is different for the matrices 4-nitroaniline and a-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid. The data suggest that matrix-analyte-solvent interactions are an important consideration for the aerosol MALDI ion signal. It appears that the ion signal is the result of a competition between solvent polarity and volatility. The solvent polarity affects matrix-analyte interactions whereas solvent volatility affects the aerosol drying process.

The mechanisms of ion formation in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry are still largely unknown. Ions may exist as pre-formed species in the solid state, or may form by ion-molecule reactions initiated by the laser shot, or, most probably, they may originate from a combina
Transition metal ion complexes with proteins and peptides are important in many areas of analytical and biological chemistry. We used positive and negative ion MALDI-MS to detect complexes with Cu and Ni ions, and show that the speciÐc and non-speciÐc transition metal ion-peptide complexes can be di
The time-of-flight effect in Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS) with an external ion source was quantified. The time-of-flight profiles of ions of different masses were measured by stepping the time interval between the ionization pulse and the gating of the trapping voltage (T gate ). The o
Dendritic polypyridines were analysed by laser desorption (LD) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry. For all the compounds examined, readily detectable cationized molecular species have been obtained under LD conditions, while for MALDI a strong matrix effect ha
