β¦ Synopsis
The adsorption and covalent coupling of bovme serum albumin (BSA) onto amphtphthc acrylic acrd copolymerstabilized polystyrene latex particles have been investtgated Special attentron was first paid to the preparatton of a homogeneous lauryl acrylate (LA)-acrylic acid radrcal-imtiated copolymer whtch has been charactertzed m terms of composition, molecular weight and surface activity. Adsorption of this copolymer (5 wt.% LA) was then performed onto a negattvely charged polystyrene latex (0.739 pm) at two dtfferent pH. Fmally, the adsorption of the BSA onto the resulting harry-like latex was examined as a function of pH and experimental condittons. Adsorption Isotherms were determmed,
showing that the plateau value IS much higher than in the case of the bare latex particles. When coupling procedures were carrred out using N-hydroxysulfosuccitumide and 1-(3.dtmethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide, the adsorption was found to decrease upon mcreasmg the concentration of the acttvating mixture, a phenomenon whtch can be explamed on the basts of electrostatic repulstons and steric hindrance.
