✦ Synopsis

A new variant of gas chromatography: acidic᎐basic gas chromatography Ž . ABGC has been proposed. In ABGC gases or vapors used as a mobile phase influenced the apparent degree of dissociation of the analyte compounds in the stationary liquid phase. The method is desirable for the selective separation of acidic or basic volatile compounds. The retention of amines and other organic compounds using acidic carbon dioxide as carrier gas and that of organic acids and polar compounds using basic ammonia as carrier gas has been theoretically and experimentally studied on capillary columns coated with polyethyleneglycol. In the former case amines retained selectively but in the latter case organic acids did. The developed theory of ABGC qualitatively conformed to experimental data. The results obtained argued against the conventional opinion that carrier gas does not influence the retention of analyte compounds. The separation principles used in ABGC could be used for other separation techniques of organic acids and bases.

## Abstract Glass capillaries coated with Chirasil‐Val, a chirally functionalised polysiloxane, are capable in principle of resolving all protein amino‐acid enantiomers in a single run and within a short analysis time, thus allowing for example the quantitative amino acid determination by enantiome
