✦ Synopsis

NMR in Biomedicine has reached a major turning point. Truman Brown, who has held the North American Editorship since the Journal's foundation in 1987, has had to resign because of pressure of other work. Truman has been involved in every decision we have taken, and has contributed mightily to our success.

We thank him for all his efforts and wish him well for the future.

The new North American Editor will be Dr Joe Helpern. On behalf of the publishers and Editorial Board I welcome him to his new post. Joe will continue our policy of moving NMR in Biomedicine into the field of physiological and functional MRI, as well as maintaining our original interest in biological and medical MRS.

Another new initiative has begun in the last few issues of NMR in Biomedicine: a Literature Awareness Service. We will be publishing this in every issue, and we hope that it will be a useful service to the MR community.

## Abstract A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is used to classify an out‐of‐sample observation vector into either of two regimes. We use asymptotic analysis to construct a domain decomposition method for a time-dependent singularly perturbed system with turning points. Together with the other numerical techniques, we develop an algorithm, which can provide accurate and efficient numerical solutions for the system.
