✦ Synopsis

A model based on the concept of cross slip is given to explain how a slip band can develop into a crack if dislocations in the band are free to move backwards and forwards.

The extension of embedded elliptical cracks by fatigue is predicted on the basis of the stress-intensity factors given by Isida and Noguchi and the ASME-Code. The calculation is performed until wall penetration and the further extension of the developed surface crack is considered. ## Ausdehnung vo

Damage detection by means of non-destructive testing plays an important role in ensuring the integrity of machine elements and structures. Vibration testing is an effective means of detecting crack development in structures. In this paper the effect of crack closure on the dynamic behaviour of canti
