β¦ Synopsis
The growth of Escherichia coli in fed-batch and continuous culture is examined and results
show that a-amylase production is strongly dependent on specific growth rate (dilution rate) of the culture and production is greatest at an intermediate rate. Using continuous culture, it has also been found that the presence of acetate above a certain concentration reduces both ~tmax, and the production of recombinant protein.

Two Escherichia coli strains, widely used for the production of various recombinant proteins, were compared for their pre-induction growth and acetate accumulation patterns. The strains studied were β¬, coliBL21 (ADES), transformed with a plasmid encoding Pseudomonas exotoxin A, and an β¬. coli K12 de
