✦ Synopsis

Electron spin resonance spectroscopy has been used, in conjunction with the spin-trapping technique (employing 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane as a spin-trap), to study the benzoyl peroxide initiated homopolymerization of styrene in benzene. The initial rate at which the polystyryl spin-adduct is formed is directly proportional to the concentration of both benzoyl peroxide and the spin-trap, but is independent of the concentration of styrene. It is apparent that the concentration of the spin-adduct moves towards a steady state and, consequently, that it decays at a significant rate. A number of different possible decay reactions are discussed.

The thermolysis mechanism of di-tert-butyl and di-tert-amyl peroxide was investigated in a variety of solvents employing electron spin resonance in collaboration with the spin-trapping technique. The tert-amyloxyl radical was trapped for the Ðrst time during the thermolysis of di-tert-amyl peroxide.

The introduction of peroxide groups onto carbon black surface was achieved through the trapping of the peroxide radicals formed by the decomposition of polymeric peroxide, such as poly(tetraethy1ene glycol peroxyadipate) (ATPPO), and bis-peroxide, such as l,l'-bis(t-buty1dioxy)cyclohexane (Perhexa-C
