✦ Synopsis
The Skyrme model in (2+1) dimensions, expressed as an (O(4) \sigma)-model, is augmented by the addition of a symmetry-breaking potential and has both instanton and sphaleron solutions. In order to obtain an explicit sphaleron configuration, the quadratic kinetic term is dropped and the stability problem is studied. With some approximations the existence of a negative eigenvalue can be demonstrated. I 1993 Academic Press, Inc.

The bosonisation of a modified massive Thirring model Lagrangian leads to a system with a solitary-wave solution. This is used as a bosonic coating (together with other examples) in a (1 + 1 )-dimensional chiral bag. With appropriate choice of parameters, the baryon energy is insensitive to the bag
