โฆ Synopsis
An easy-to-use approximate method is described for deriving system failure rate distributions from component distributions which can be assumed to be gammas. The method is Bayesian in concept. It is intended for practical use by reliability engineers having available any form of prior information for defining each component's gamma distribution's parameters: two percentiles, one percentile and the mean (with qualifications), one percentile or the mean, and none at all (so that a non-informative prior applies). The method applies directly to series systems. It is also applicable to series-parallel systems (f component 'effective failure rates' can be assumed.
