โœฆ Synopsis

RECENT studies of secondary kinetic isotope effects have focussed on reactions which involve bond making and breaking at or near the site of isotopic substitution. We have now observed a mass effect in a purely conformational change: the racemization of diketones I and II. In connection with our work on doubly bridged biphenyls 2 we had occasion to prepare I, m. p. 223-224' (under nitrogen), II Grateful acknowledgment is made to the donors of the Petroleum Research Fund, administered by the American Chemical Society, for the partial support of this research, and to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for fellowship support (K. M.).

Chorismate synthase (EC 4.6.1.4) is the shikimate pathway enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate (EPSP) to chorismate. The enzyme reaction is unusual because it involves a trans-1,4 elimination of the C-3 phosphate and the C-6 proR hydrogen and it has an absolute
