โœฆ Synopsis

Of course, this instrument could be improved by introducing some elementary modifications which we did not undertake, namely.

  1. diminishing the transmission of vibrations into the mercury of the manometer;

  2. introduction of a thin and small stainless steel circular plate, which would be floating centred on the free surface of the mercury, so that the platinum pin Pt would make the electrical contact with this plate, instead of direct contact with the mercury, thus avoiding the adhesion of the liquid to the point, which increases the relaxation-time;

  3. finally, modification of the variable impedance pistonvalve in order to achieve a faster response, this would diminish the relaxation-time as well.

We have found that solder coated spring wire brushes can make a sliding superconducting contact with a rotating superconducting commutator. With a relative velocity of 0.5 cm s "I between brushes and rotor, we observe critical currents of up to O. 1A. Below the critical current we detect no resistan

Knowledge of the forces at the wheel}rail contact is fundamental to estimate the consequences in terms of noise and vibration. The traditional use of strain gauges mounted on the wheel web and axle is not capable of determining the high-frequency content of the contact force. Measurements made on th
