โœฆ Synopsis

A new type of support for low temperature use is described. The support is made of perforated tube and has a thermal conductance of up to 5 times lower than that of a simple unperforated thin wall tube support having the same wall thickness and rigidity. Theoretical predictions and experimental data regarding the performance of the new support are presented. The method of construction is detailed and optimal design procedures are discussed in full.

Measurements of the thermal conductivity of pure metal samples at low temperatures pose special problems because of the high conductivity. A new sensitive method is described. This technique consists of using a calibrated AuFe-NbTi thermocouple as a differential thermometer in conjunction with a SQU
