โœฆ Synopsis

The 18th Symposium, organized by Professor Katsuyuki Ogura of Chiba Institute of Technology, was very successful, with about 250 participants in attendance. There were 46 oral presentations of 24 minutes each and 4 plenary lectures.

The first plenary lecture was presented by Professor Toru Koizumi of Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University on "Molecular Design of Chiral Sulfinylethene-Type Dienophiles and Application to the Synthesis of Biologically Active Compounds." The content of the lecture was more extensive than that of the invited lecture that he presented at the 14th International Symposium on Organic Chemistry of Sulfur held in todz, Poland, last September. The following three types of chiral dienophiles were prepared and allowed to react with cyclopentadiene, furan, and other dienes, with or without a Lewis acid present.
