The work reported by M. P. Kamat, G. W. Swift and D. E. Killian in a paper entitled 'Beamcolumn element for inelastic analysis', Int. J. num. Meth. Engng, 10, 1177Engng, 10, -1178Engng, 10, (1976) ) was carried out independently of any other previously published or unpublished similar works or any other work under development at the time. The original contributions of our paper were ours alone and were not based upon any work of Holzer none of which was communicated to us either verbally or in writing. Furthermore, by Holzer's own admission our work is completely different from his both in the formulation basis and development. Kamat et al. could not have been aware of the work of Holzer et al. for the following two reasons: Firstly, the earliest publication date of any of the reports referenced by Holzer in his letter is May 1975 whereas the paper by Kamar et al. was
