โฆ Synopsis
A re-description of Peloscolex variegatus LEIDY ( Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) with a consideration of the diagnosis of the genus Peloscolex Peloscolex variegatus LEIDY 1852 is the type species of the genus Peloscolex but chiefly owing to the inadequacy of the original description the genus has followed a chequered career. I n some material recently sent to me by Dr. A. M. BEETON (U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service Biological Laboratory, Ann Arbor, Michigan) I wits able to reoognise specimens which were clearly attributable to Peloscolex and, as they agreed in all respects with LEIDY'S brief description they are recognised as being P. variegatus. This is the first record of the species since the original account and so I append a description of my material. This is followed by a history of the genus and a re-appraisal of its diagnosis.
