The van der Wyk equation, \(1 / T_{\mathrm{f}}=a+b / Z\) (where \(T_{\mathrm{f}}\) is the melting point in \(\mathrm{K}, Z\) is the number of carbons in the alkane and \(a\) and \(b\) are constants), for the prediction of melting points of straight chain alkanes up to 60 carbons has been reexamined.

Gel filtration studies on Sephadex G-75 demonstrate markedly increased elution volumes for proteins chromatographed with polyethylene glycol. As little as 5% (w/v) polyethylene glycol in the applied protein sample can reduce apparent molecular weight estimates by gel filtration as much as 55%. Furth
