✦ Synopsis

Carbonyl compounds are rapidly thioacetalized in near quantitative yields by using anhydrous iron(lII) chloride dispersed on silica gel at room temperature.

The conversion of carbonyl compounds to the cyclic dithioacetals constitutes an important part of many organic synthetic transformationsi.

Dithioacetals are also useful in organic synthesis as acyl carbanion cquivulents2~ Numerous methods that are reported for this conversion include the use of pmtic acids, Lewis acids and some silicon reagents. la More recently Nafion-H catatysta, silica gel treated with thionyl chloride4

## Abstract A novel and green approach has been described for the synthesis of 2,3‐dihydro‐1__H__‐1,5‐benzodiazepines from __o__‐phenylenediamines and ketones using cerium(III) chloride/sodium iodide supported on silica gel under mild and heterogeneous conditions. The reactions are carried out at r
