โœฆ Synopsis

Each year hundreds of compounds are tested by the Environmental Mutagenesis Test Development Program (EMTDP) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences National Toxicology Program for their ability to induce mutations and other genetic effects in bacteria, cultured mammalian cells, and Drosophila. Massive volumes of data from test laboratories located throughout the United States are generated. Because of the importance of this work, the data must be collected, managed, analyzed, and made available for retrieval quickly and efficiently. The EMTDP problem is described in detail, its major information flows are presented, and the development of a laboratory data entry terminal and PROPHET-based information system called the Environmental Mutagenesis Information System (EMIS) to solve its data collection and data management problems is discussed.
