โœฆ Synopsis

We argue for the adoption of a predictive approach to model speciยฎcation. Speciยฎcally, we derive the dierence between means and the ratio of determinants of covariance matrices when a subset of explanatory variables is included or excluded from a regression. Results for an economic application are presented as an example.

Before a drug can be marketed, an initial dose must be established. Sheiner et al. argue that a population approach leads to the most informed and rational decision making. We discuss the choice of an initial dose from both a predictive and estimative viewpoint. Our criteria are based upon evaluatin

Three predictive models are tested against soil thermal conductivity data at high temperatures: two (deV-1 and deV-2) are modi"cations of the original de Vries model, and the third is the Gori model. Model deV-1 results correlated very closely for 30, 50 and 703C, and moderately close for 903C. Gene

The aim of the present paper is to make use of the modern theory of point processes to study optimal solutions for single-item inventory. Demand for goods is assumed to occur according to a compound Poisson process and production occurs continuously and deterministically between times of demand, suc

In recent years an impressive array of publications has appeared claiming considerable successes of neural networks in modelling ยฎnancial data but sceptical practitioners and statisticians are still raising the question of whether neural networks really are `a major breakthrough or just a passing fa
