✦ Synopsis

Alkyl diglycerides, a class of lipids which was first isolated from shark liver oils1), recently have been detected in various human tissues2). We have isolated from lipid extracts of blood of hyperlipemic patients a fraction that migrated on adsorbent layers at the same rate as did synthetic alkyl diglycerides. This fraction was isolated and found to consist of an ester of o-phthalic acid.

In our opinion, it is not likely that phthalates are genuine constituents of blood plasma, although diesters of phthalic acid were shown to contaminate food and especially fatty foods, kept in plastic bags3). Dioctyl phthalate was also tentatively demonstrated to be present in lipid extracts of commercial milk4).

Because the concentration of phthalate found in plasma is relatively high, we believe that their presence is due to contamination induced during storage. Indeed, by analysis of aliquots of a plasma immediately after bleeding and after varied storage periods in plastic transfusion packs, we were able to demonstrate that phthalates were not present in the original sample but did increase in concentration during storage in plastic bags s).
