## Abstract Methanol, in combination with a nonβionic phosphazene base, was used to initiate the polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane. In bulk, an instantaneous and large increase in viscosity was observed upon addition of the initiator. In toluene solution, the equilibrium state was reac

β¦ Synopsis
Abstraet--Cyclo-olefins may be polymerized under very mild conditions to give linear polymers using a mixture of WCI6 and A1Br3. No metal alkyls are involved. The polymers contain no vinylic unsaturation.
* Commercial product, 60 per cent trans, 30 per cent cis, I0 per cent saturated material. t This evidence does not exclude the presence of macrocylic structures. * Courtauld models.

Polymerization of 2-methyl-2-oxazoline was carried out using a trifunctional initiator, 2-perbromomethyl-2-oxazoline. The degree of polymerization (DP) of the resulting polymer was very close to the feed mole ratio of the monomer to initiator. The number-average molecular weight a, increased linearl
