A mechanism for population inversion based on t?wz dynamic displacement of the equilibrium position for internal motions is presented. The displucemont is treated exactly using a van Week ~r~us~orrn~~io~ while the remaining non-adiabatic terms arc handled in low-order perturbation theory. Criteria for population inversion nro established.
