✦ Synopsis
This study describes a new and advantageous procedure for the synthesis of alkanesulfonyl chlorides (2) by the reaction of alkyl thiocyanates (1) with sulfuryl chloride in a mixture of acetic acid and water. The alkanesulfonyl chlorides were obtained in good yields.

y-and a-hydroxyalkane-1-thiols, in many cases easily accessible over the chlorohydrins, are converted to y-and a-chloroalkylsulfonyl chlorides by the combined action of chlorine and water. A mechanism is suggested. This new synthesis method provides an easy way to obtain sultams.
