✦ Synopsis

Xylene-based permanent mounting media presently used for forensic microscopy of textile fibres suffer from some disadvantages. Six previously untried mountants were evaluated and Phytohistol was selected for further examination. It was colourless, water-soluble, and miscible with water and glycerine, without the health hazards of xylene use. It exhibited no fluorescence when fresh and did not absorb UV light, and is now routinely used for fibre examination in the authors' laboratory.
