Objectives: To summarise changes in education and medical education which have influenced the development of a new model for postgraduate and continuing education in psychiatry, and to describe that model.
Conclusions: The NSW Institute of Psychiatry Postgraduate Course in Psychiatry has incorporated developments in problem-based learning in medical education, the modern principles of adult learning, the principles and practices of distance education, and selected advances in computerbased learning.
