## Abstract Multiple mode instabilities in erbium‐doped fiber laser are undesirable due to the large amplitude noise in the laser. One scheme is proposed to suppress this kind of instabilities by inserting a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber in the ring cavity. The results show that the nonli
