Abstract
Multiple mode instabilities in erbium‐doped fiber laser are undesirable due to the large amplitude noise in the laser. One scheme is proposed to suppress this kind of instabilities by inserting a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber in the ring cavity. The results show that the nonlinear effect not only eliminates the laser instability but also suppresses the noise in the laser. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
