The construction and operation of a hand-operated box sampler is described. The sampler covers an area of 25 X 25 cm and penetrates into the sediment to the depth of 15 cm. It was successfully operated on a sandy bottom, and on sand mixed with gravel up to a water depth of 1 meter.

A simple, easy-to assemble gradient generator for capillary electrochromatography is described. Using a homologous mixture of alkylphenones and a macroporous polyacrylic separation matrix, we demonstrate the feasibility of either stepwise or continuous gradients to be performed in a reproducible man
