✦ Synopsis

A new method, called double-focusing, is proposed for the tomography of heterogeneous media. The method combines directed active and passiL,e coherent schemes of location. In combination with spatial filtration this allows the resolution of heterogeneities as small as half a working warielength in sounded media. The method S eficiency is proued by the results of simulations. 0 I996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

## Abstract A methodology is developed to determine the microwave backscatter from inhomogeneous materials and structures using a free‐space focused‐beam apparatus. This quantitative method determines the scattering coefficient for inhomogeneous surfaces and echo width for linear discontinuities. M
