✦ Synopsis


After an allowance has been made for a background internal friction rising with temperature, the peaks in the internal friction/temperature curves for cold worked steel and for martensitic steel have been found to be describable in terms of a lognormal distribution of relaxation times. The steels used contained 0.7 and 0.75% C, the frequency of vibration was about 1 c/s and the surface sheer strein was 1.3 x 10-4. The lognormal distribution in relaxation times could be interpreted as being due to a similar distribution in the square of the dislocation loop lengths. Die Stilhle enthielten 0.7 bzw. 0.75% C, die Schwingungsfrequenz war etwa 1 c/s, und die Scherungen an der Oberfliiche betrugen 1.3 x 10-4. Die Normalverteilung der Relaxationszeitlogarithmen kann zurtickgefiihrt werden auf eine iihnliche Verteilung der Quadrate der Versetzungsringliingen.
