✦ Synopsis

A simple cryogenic stage (liquid nitrogen cooled) is described for use with a Jeol scanning electron microscope. The installation of the stage within the SEM does not require any modification. The stage is capable of achieving temperatures between 80 and 85 K. Movement of the stage required for scanning and otherwise can be obtained with the original micrometer screws.

A liquid-helium stage to be inserted into a scanning electron microscope (SEM) is described. The sample chamber, which is filled with liquid helium, has a volume of about 8 x 7 x 5 cm 3 Translation of the cooled sample in x, y, and z directions is possible during electron-optical observation.
