A remarkably efficient double crossed aldol condensation of piperidinβ4βone with various aromatic aldehydes is described at room temperature in the presence of diethylamine and lithium perchlorate under solventβfree conditions. Excellent yields of 3,5βbis(arylmethylidene)piperidinones are achieved in a facile oneβpot general procedure. Structure of the products is determined by spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis.
