โœฆ Synopsis

A high-speed shear box is described. The device has a shear rate of the order of (1 \mathrm{~m} \mathrm{~s}^{-1}). Transducers capable of measuring shear force, horizontal displacement of the shear box and change in height of the sample during shear are described in conjunction with the data capture system. Some preliminary results from the fast shear box machine are presented, which show that soil strength is greater and that the soil volume increases more with increasing speed of deformation.
