Abs~act~--The problems of the design of a high-intensity vacuum ultra-violet light source are discussed and details of an argon-arc source which has an output of 3 ร— 10 le quanta sec -1 cm -~ are given. Methods of source calibration are considered including the measurement of the source output whilst it is actually in use. The effect of gas pressure and the presence of diluting gases have also been studied.
