A simple general model for the interaction between a particle and the fluid in a fluid&d suspension, enables a hydrodynamic criterion for the onset of bubbling in fluidixed beds to be formulated in a compact and fully predictive form. Excellent agreement is found between the proposed criterion and exwrimental observations reuorted in the literature for liquid beds and gas Auidized systems operating under bdth ambient and elevated &sure conditions.
