Abstract
The lifetimes of 17 commercial ethyleneβhexene copolymers were measured under fatigue and constant load. These LLDPE resins all had about the same melt flow index and density, but their lifetimes under fatigue and constant load varied by factors of 17 to 10^4^, respectively. The lifetimes in fatigue were 1/25 to 1/2000 times the lifetime under constant load, but the ranking of the resins in fatigue with respect to their resistance to slow crack growth correlated with the ranking under a constant load. It is recommended that a tensile fatigue test on a notched specimen is a useful short time test for the quality control of ethylenehexene copolymers that may be used for gas pipes or other critical applications.
