โฆ Synopsis
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in the scanning mode was successfully applied to the study of the polymerization of methacrylic acid (2.25 M) in dimethylformamide, provided that for evaluation of thermograms care was taken to use:
(a) the appropriate value of the heat of polymerization, AH,.o (-53 kJ/mol), derived from polymerizations utilizing a sufficiently high amount of initiator (0.01 M bis-p-tert-butylcyclohexylperoxydicarbo-hate} and (b) the proper activation parameters ,or the initiator decomposition under reaction circumstances, estimated to be Ea = 113 kJ/mol and In An = 32.4 for computation of instantaneous initiator concentrations.
The resulting values for the polymerization activation parameters were: Ea = 74kJ/mol and In A = 21.0 in good agreement with the literature.
