✦ Synopsis

It is interesting to read the paper by van Aardt and Visser (1), who observed that Portland cement-dolomitic aggregate autoclaved mortars deteriorated rapidly during storage in %5 Na2SO 4 solution at 5°C giving much thaumasite as the soft pulpy mass. Similar water-cured mortars expanded and cracked, giving much ettringite, but only a little thaumasite and hence no pulpy mass. They also observed that siliceous aggregate mortar both autoclaved and cured in water did not form any thaumasite; cracking was due to formation of ettringite. At 25°C neither of the above mortars formed any thaumasite.
