A new 2 step synthesis of (+/-) girolline 1 starting from the easily available o~-chloro-13aminoaldehyde 4 and 2-aminoimidazole 5 is described. The reaction of 4 with 5, followed by deprotection, affords the threo diastereoisomer.

A route to the total synthesis of the title compound is described. The key step involves the [3,3] sigmatropic of the silyl keteneacetal derived from an allylic P-ketoester. The potential application of this protocol to the construction of the higher trichothecenes is also discussed.
