✦ Synopsis

The thymus-independent immune response has been simulated by interfacing two computer models. THYMS, a model which simulates the production of T-lymphocytes by the thymus, is used to simulate the production of B-lymphocytes. The assumption is made that B-lymphocytes are produced by some unknown tissue analogous to the thymus. The antibody production is simulated by ABIGL which is a clonal selection model of antibody synthesis. The quantitative effects of irradiation upon the humoral immune response to polysaccharide antigen has been used to evaluate the interfaced model. The largest effect of irradiation upon the immune response is a delay in the response. The differences between the irradiated and the unirradiated controls are largest at 1 week following irradiation. The results compare favorably with natural data. These data demonstrate the advantages of computer simulation as an adjunct to experimentation. The simulation data can rule out trivial experiments and help to plan appropriate experiments. The simulation is thus continually improved as its predictions are tested. Future development of this system WEI include the introduction of the T-cell and the macrophage into the antibody response and the introduction of cell-mediated immunity.

## Abstract ## Background: With the intention to reduce overshooting immune response, glucocorticoids are frequently administered perioperatively in children undergoing open heart surgery. In a retrospective study we investigated extensively the modulation of the humoral and cellular immune respon
