A simple circuit designed to automate the operation of a commercial battery charge/ discharge unit by system-controlling software is reported. By incorporating this circuit, a unit can be computer-controlled to switch between charge and discharge. The control strategy is based on a battery charge th

✦ Synopsis
The study of Ni-Cd cells and batteries has led to the requirement for an automated method of removing fixed amounts of charge and logging voltages accurately . There are numerous possible sources of error in the manual approach, particularly when experiments are conducted on a continuous basis over several days . In this paper the design of a microcomputercontrolled unit which can discharge up to eight cells or batteries, apply load pulses, and log voltages is described . All possible discharge parameters are under the control fo the program and no operator intervention is necessary . Each channel is independent, but they may be paralleled for constantcurrent discharge at up to 40 A .
