โฆ Synopsis
The authors determined the avalanching behaviour of two coal types, one of good and the other of poor handleability characteristics. This revealed significant differences in the nature of flow of the coals. The criteria established will now enable a structured study of the variables that affect handleability and also permit industrial consumers of coal to specify minimum acceptable limits for its transport characteristics.

Hydraulic transport studies with coal and copper ore have been carried out in a 0.0254 m and a 0.01 9 m diameter pipeline to observe the effect of solids concentration, surface characteristics and particle size distribution on pressure drop. The coarse coal showed a lower pressure drop than the fine
The published methods for calculating pressure gradients for the flow of coarse particles in suspension in a horizontal pipeline have been critically examined and have been found to show considerable inconsistencies. Experimental techniques have been developed for the measurement of two in-line para
