Pressure drop prediction in hydraulic transport of bi-dispersed particles of coal and copper ore in pipeline

Hydraulic transport studies with coal and copper ore have been carried out in a 0.0254 m and a 0.01 9 m diameter pipeline to observe the effect of solids concentration, surface characteristics and particle size distribution on pressure drop. The coarse coal showed a lower pressure drop than the fines at any velocity of suspension, whereas copper ore, exhibited the opposite trend. It has been observed, that the pressure drop for hydraulic transportation of bi-dispersed particles is a minimum at certain weight proportions of coarse to fines, as compared to that for the transportation of either of the single size.

Based on the experimental results, an empirical expression was developed for the prediction of pressure gradient.

Des etudes de transport hydraulique du charbon et du minerai de cuivre ont ete, menees dans des conduites de 0,0254 m et 0,019 m afin d'observer I'effet de la concentration de solides, des caracteristiques de surface et de la distribution de taille des particules sur la perte de charge. Le chabon grossier montre une plus faible perte de charge que les fines a n'import quelle vitesse de suspension, tandis que le minerai de cuivre montre la tendance inverse. On a observe que la perte de charge pour le transport hydraulique de particules bidispersees presente un minimum pour certaines proportions particules grossieres sur fines, comparativement a la perte de charge pour le transport soit de particules grossieres, soit de fines.

A partir des resultats experimentaux, une expression empirique a ete etablie pour le prediction du gradient de pression.
