CARBON

ratio is very sensitive to preferred orientation. A susceptibility minimum appears to correspond to an intermediate state of partial graphitization. Layer ordering as a function of time at constant temperature approximates a relaxation process with a distribution of relaxation times. There are appreciable differences in the ~aphit~ation rates (and perhaps in the degree of ~aphi~ation obtainable) of various carbons. Although noticeable changes occur in less than one minute at 2900ยฐC times of the order of 100 minutes or more are required to complete the process at this temperature. The relationship of these results of theories of graphitization will be discussed. *A contract facility of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. 91. It has been frequently stated that the degree of graphitization of carbon depends chiefly on the highest temperature of heat treatment and only slightly on the other conditions of heat treatment. In this investigation, however, it was found that an ambient gas phase has a relatively large effect on

The effect of electric spark discharge on graphitization of carbon was investigated using three different types of heat treated carbon such as petroleum coke, pitch-bonded petroleum coke, and Akabira coal carbon. Each cylindrical specimen of 6 mm dia. by 6 mm length was shocked by electric spark dis

## Abstract In this article the effect of graphitization in twodimensional cโ€c composite bodies prepared by impregnation of novalak resin is reported. Mechanical properties were determined by bending tests and microstructural features were studied by SEM and XRD. It was found that primary graphitiz
