Structural changes which accompany the catalytic graphitization of carbon have been investigated. Utilizing X-ray diffraction and high temperature microscopy techniques, the effectiveness of various additives in promoting the formation of graphite from a variety of carbon materials of varying degree
The course of catalytic graphitization of hard carbon was studied kinetically. Carbons produced at 800ยฐC from divinyl benzene polymer, Amberlite IRC-50 and furfural-furan resins with added cupric oxide were heat treated at temperatures between 1450 and 1525ยฐC for 30-180 min. Graphitization proceeded
Graphite fibers were developed from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers which were modified with potassium permanganate. After the transitional temperature, the formation of graphite structures commenced, the crystals increased in thickness, and the preferred orientation of the fiber crystals increased.
